A young charity which aims to provide more life-saving defibrillators in its local community has received a helping hand from West Lancashire Cemetery & Crematorium.

The Southport Saviours Foundation, which was set up in May 2023, has received £2,000 from the crematorium towards its work.

The charity does not only want to increase the number of defibrillators, it also wants to educate and raise awareness through first aid training – and as a thank you for the donation, visited the crematorium and trained its staff on how to use defibrillators.

West Lancashire Cemetery & Crematorium is part of Westerleigh Group, one of the UK’s largest independent owners and operators of crematoria and cemeteries, with 40 sites in England, Scotland, and Wales, all set within beautifully landscaped gardens of remembrance which provide peaceful places for people to visit and reflect.

Westerleigh Group prides itself on providing exceptional care to the bereaved, the standards of which are inspected by the Federation of Burial and Cremation Authorities (FBCA) in England and Wales, and the Scottish Government.

The crematorium’s donation came from its metal recycling scheme.

With the consent of families, metals recovered during cremation are recycled, and any money raised is used to support selected charities, local activities and environmental initiatives which benefit the communities that the crematorium serves.

West Lancashire Cemetery & Crematorium Manager Laura Linnane said: “It’s been proven that quick accessibility to a defibrillator when someone has a heart attack can significantly increase their chances of survival.

“The Southport Saviours Foundation was set up by three local residents who had all had connections to heart attacks and who, from their experiences, truly see the need for more accessible defibrillators to be provided.

“At West Lancashire Cemetery & Crematorium, we know all too well how precious life is, so it’s a privilege for us to be able to support a small local charity which is working to save lives.”

Richard Moore, one of the founders of Southport Saviours, said: “The donation from West Lancashire Cemetery & Crematorium will enable us to purchase all the equipment (a defibrillator & external box) to cover a location quickly.

“We know how important a defibrillator can be in an emergency situation, and this donation may just save someone’s life.”
